The UIC College of Dentistry offers an advanced standing program for foreign-trained dentists. The Doctor of Dental Medicine Advanced Standing (DMD-AS) is designed to provide foreign-trained dentists with the education and experience required to practice dentistry in the US. Beginning in January, the program consists of 28 months of coursework and clinical experience to deliver strong competencies in health promotion and disease prevention, diagnosis, evidence-based practice, communication, collaboration, and community engagement. Students will benefit from innovative Team-based (TBL) learning models and courses in Applied Oral and Behavioral Sciences, Oral-Systemic Issues, and Community-Based Learning. Upon completion of the program, students receive a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree and are eligible for licensure to practice dentistry in the United States of America.

Citizenship and Immigration Eligibility
We accept applications from students that are currently living in the U.S. on a valid visa status that allows them to study. Individuals holding a tourist visa do not qualify.
Transcript Evaluation and Instructions
Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE)
A highly competitive comprehensive Grade Point Average (GPA) per the ECE course-by-course evaluation is required. UIC only accepts evaluations from the Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE). For more information please visit the ECE website.
Letters of Evaluation Instructions
UIC COD requires three (3) letters of recommendation. Preferably, one should be from a U.S. dental practitioner. The College will only accept Letters of recommendation submitted via ADEA CAAPID. UIC COD will not accept additional letters of recommendation via the university’s online application or via email. Letters of recommendation must be on letterhead and must include a signature.
TOEFL Requirement Instructions
Official scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) are required for admissions.
All students must meet the minimum sub-scores to be eligible to apply:
- Overall: 80 (internet-based: IBT)
- Writing: 21
- Speaking: 20
- Listening: 17
- Reading: 19
The average TOEFL iBT score for the last entering class was 101.
It is required that TOEFL scores be reported electronically directly to UIC by ETS. The University of Illinois Chicago institution code for ETS TOEFL is 1851. Please note that TOEFL scores must be valid within 2 years of the UIC application date. Scores older than two years old will not be accepted. There is no exception to this rule.
The UIC College of Dentistry prefers that students applying to our program take the TOEFL iBT (not Home Edition).
The TOEFL Best Score will NOT be accepted. For more information on the TOEFL, please visit the ETS website.
The following exemptions will be made for:
- The English proficiency requirement will be waived for applicants with international coursework completed in countries where English is the only official language. Scores are waived automatically during the application process based on where school completion is reported. This is the link to the university website, where you can check if you are waived from submitting a TOEFL score. - Non-native English speakers who have graduated from a U.S. high school or university, or from a country where the only official language is English.
Note: Applicants from countries where the official language is not English, but who attended a university where English was the language of instruction, are not exempt from submitting TOEFL scores.
